Self-sufficient Transport

self-sufficient transport

Steam locomotives can transport loads on highly efficient railway systems, using raw solid biofuel directly while requiring few resources to build and maintain.

We have re-invented the locomotive boiler for the 21st century.

Our technology eliminates the sparks and smoke that traditional boilers emit when fed solid biofuel.

Two key principles underpin our design:

No heat is removed until combustion is complete.

Fast moving water is heated inside small robust tubes.

Our technology overcomes the challenges faced by conventional boilers, where a large volume of high pressure water surrounds a fire in a rectangular box with flat surfaces.

The conventional boiler’s water-walled firebox quenches combustion, generating smoke, which coats the heat transfer surfaces leading to frequent cleaning while producing heavy local particulate pollution.

Mackwell boiler technology enables self-sufficient transport.
